1. Debunking the Popular Myths
Many "traditional" tests passed around the internet are, quite frankly, unreliable. Before we look at what works, let’s talk about what doesn't:
The Water Test: People claim a real Rudraksha sinks and a fake one floats. This is a myth. A genuine but very dry bead might float, while a fake bead made of wood or lead-weighted plastic will sink.
The Copper Coin Test: The idea is that a real bead will rotate between two copper coins due to magnetic properties. In reality, any round, textured object can rotate between coins due to simple mechanical friction and the way you hold them.
The Milk Test: Some say real Rudraksha keeps milk fresh for days. There is no scientific or scriptural evidence to support this—please don't spoil your milk!
2. The "Five-Senses" Visual Inspection
You don't always need a lab to spot a low-quality fake. Look for these physical markers:
The Mukhi Lines (Clefts)
A "Mukhi" is a natural groove that runs from the top (mouth) to the bottom (tail) of the bead.
Genuine: The lines are deep, irregular, and look like natural valleys.
Fake: The lines are shallow, perfectly straight, or show signs of being carved with a tool or a hot wire.
The Natural Hole
Every Rudraksha seed has a natural hole through the center.
Check this: If the hole looks perfectly smooth and machine-drilled, it might be a synthetic bead or a different type of seed entirely.
The 1-Mukhi "Round" Trap
Be very careful here. The "Round 1-Mukhi" is extremely rare in nature (the genuine 1-Mukhi is usually cashew-shaped). If someone is selling round 1-Mukhi beads in bulk, they are almost certainly 5-Mukhi beads that have had four lines glued shut or sanded down.
3. The Gold Standard: Scientific Verification
If you are investing in a high-Mukhi bead (like a 14-Mukhi or a Gauri Shankar), visual inspection isn't enough. You need science.
X-Ray/CT Scanning
A Rudraksha’s power lies in its internal seeds. An X-ray will show the internal compartments (locules). A genuine 5-Mukhi bead must have 5 internal compartments and 5 seeds. Fakes will often show a solid interior or a mismatched number of seeds.
Independent Lab Certification
Always demand a certificate from a reputable, independent gemological lab. A certificate ensures the bead has been tested for density, origin, and internal structure.
